Fruit Tree Pruning in Humboldt County

Humboldt County is rich with fruit trees — apples, pears, plums, cherries, and walnuts in old homesteads from Arcata to Ferndale, and family orchards across the Eel River Valley. Pruning matters a lot for fruit trees: it shapes the tree, opens it to light and airflow, manages crop load, controls height for easier harvest, and prevents the structural failures that come with overloaded branches.

What proper fruit tree pruning does

Good pruning balances growth and fruiting wood, opens the canopy so light reaches the interior, reduces disease pressure by improving airflow, lowers the tree to a manageable harvest height, removes crossing and rubbing branches, and renews the fruiting structure on older trees. The goal isn't to make the tree small — it's to make it productive, healthy, and harvestable.

When to prune

Most pome fruit (apples, pears) is pruned during dormancy in late winter. Stone fruit (plums, cherries, peaches) is often pruned in summer in our wet climate to reduce disease risk. Walnuts and other large fruiting hardwoods follow their own timing. We schedule pruning based on species, age, and goals — and we'll explain why during the estimate.

Restoration pruning

Many Humboldt properties have old fruit trees that haven't been pruned in years — sometimes decades. These trees can often be brought back into productive shape with restoration pruning done over two to three seasons. We won't try to fix it all in one cut; aggressive single-season pruning of an old tree can do more harm than good.

Backyard trees and small orchards

We work on single backyard fruit trees, mixed home orchards, and small commercial orchards. For homeowners who want to learn pruning themselves, we're happy to walk through what we're doing and why during the job.
