Tree trimming and pruning, done well, makes trees safer, healthier, and longer-lived. Done poorly — topping, lion-tailing, indiscriminate cuts — it weakens trees and shortens their lives. North Coast Arborists prunes to ISA standards across Humboldt County: structural pruning for young and middle-aged trees, crown cleaning and crown reduction for mature trees, clearance pruning around homes and power lines, view pruning where it can be done responsibly, and seasonal fruit tree work.
We perform crown cleaning (removing dead, diseased, and broken limbs), crown thinning (selectively removing branches to reduce wind load), crown reduction (shortening over-extended limbs to reduce mechanical stress), crown raising (lifting the canopy for clearance), structural pruning on young and middle-aged trees, restoration pruning on trees previously damaged or topped, and clearance pruning around buildings, walkways, driveways, and utility lines.
Trees on the North Coast grow fast and grow big. Wet winters, mild summers, and rich soils mean that without periodic pruning, mature redwoods, firs, and broadleaf trees can develop heavy crowns and weak attachments that fail in winter storms. We prune to reduce wind load and remove deadwood before it falls, while preserving the tree's natural form and long-term health.
We don't top trees. Topping — cutting major limbs back to stubs — permanently weakens the tree, triggers weak regrowth, invites decay, and creates worse hazards in five to ten years than the original concern. If a tree is too big for its space, the honest options are crown reduction by a qualified arborist or removal. We'll tell you which one we recommend and why.
Most pruning on the North Coast can be done year-round, but timing matters for specific goals. Structural pruning of deciduous trees is often best in late winter when the structure is visible. Fruit tree pruning is typically done in winter for shape and production. Pruning for wound response is best avoided in early spring leaf-out. We'll recommend the right window for your trees during the estimate.
